The idea
Once a month, what actually changed in the neighbourhood — openings, closings, and things worth knowing. Every item below was checked against a source this month. If we couldn't confirm it, it isn't here. This issue: two confirmed openings near Phrom Phong, an EmSphere update, two closures that most of the web is still getting wrong, and a note on two items we expected to include but couldn't verify.
Open (or opening)
Butchery Coffee, Sukhumvit 49. Named in Time Out Bangkok's best new cafes of 2026: a slim, warm wood-toned counter café on Soi 49, open 7am–5pm, coffee from ฿65 — the kind of place you duck into before a Fuji Super run, as Time Out puts it. No excess, no posturing. Soi 49 is an easy walk east along Sukhumvit from Phrom Phong, on the way to Thonglor, or one short motorbike ride. Worth adding to the rotation if you haven't already.
At EmSphere. The EM District's third mall — right next to Benjasiri Park, a short walk from BTS Phrom Phong Exit 6 — opened in December 2023 and has settled into its anchor lineup: an IKEA city-format store and UOB Live, the concert arena that has been running major international acts since its February 2024 debut. If you haven't been since the opening rush, it's worth a fresh look. Full guide: EmSphere.
A note on two items we couldn't confirm. Kenny's second branch (Sukhumvit Soi 31, cited in Koktail) and Bo.lan's rumoured return on Sukhumvit 53 (cited in BK Magazine) both appeared in our candidate list this month. On re-check, neither source confirmed the claim. Both are dropped. We'll revisit if the openings materialise.
Closed — and still recommended elsewhere
Soul Food Mahanakorn (Thonglor) closed in June 2021. Permanently. The owners announced the closure on Instagram, citing COVID-era alcohol bans and revenue losses they described as unmanageable — Coconuts Bangkok covered it at the time. The restaurant still appears on "best of Sukhumvit" roundups across the web, including articles published this year. If a guide recommends it, that tells you something about the guide.
AIS D.C. at Emporium closed in January 2023 when AIS's contract with TCDC ended — the space had operated as a design library since TCDC opened it back in 2005. The free coworking space is still listed on "best coworking spots in Bangkok" posts — some written in 2025 and 2026. Before building a workday around it, assume those lists have not been updated.
Both closures are marked on our own pages — see how we verify.
Next issue: August 2026. Know something that opened or closed in the patch? Tell us.
